What I Read in... March

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

This month was hit and miss for reading. I told myself that I was not allowed to buy any new books until I read at least three on my bookshelf. But that plan was thrown in the backseat once I was given a huge gift!

I started the month reading The Adventures of Slim and Howdy by Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn (from Brooks & Dunn) but I just couldn't trudge through it. Then, out of the blue, Morgan gave me his Kindle! {Thank you so much, Morgan!} So I started scouring the free Amazon e-books and signed up for free e-book emails (here and here), which means that I usually buy one or two free books per day! Focus by Ingrid Ricks was one of the free e-books I 'bought,' and while it's a short read, it is very powerful.

Focus by Ingrid Ricks

"Imagine walking into an eye doctor's office for the first time in your life expecting to walk out with a cute pair of red cat-eye frames--only to learn you suffer from an incurable eye disease and are already legally blind.
In her powerful memoir, Focus, Ingrid Ricks delves into the shock of discovering at age thirty-seven that she was in the advanced stages of Retinitis Pigmentosa, a devastating degenerative eye disease that doctors said would eventually steal her remaining eyesight. Gripped with the terrifying fear that she wouldn't be able to see her two young daughters grow up, would become a burden to her husband, and would lose the career and independence that defines her, Ingrid embarks on a quest to fix her eyes that ends up fixing her life." The Adventures of Slim & Howdy by Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn

"Country music superstars Brooks & Dunn have enjoyed massive success (30 million albums sold, dozens of awards), but surely a novel about their alter egos couldn't possibly excite anybody outside of die-hard fans, could it? Actually, the duo, along with novelist Fitzhugh, bash out a comic caper that has enough plot twists and nutty one-liners to hook even twang-haters. The book follows lanky, laconic Slim and romantic, goofy Howdy as the two troubadours ramble around the Texas honky-tonk circuit. There's the time Slim, armed with a pair of hedge clippers, reclaims his stolen guitar from Brushfire Boone; or the hot double date that ends with a pantsless Howdy dodging bullets. The boys land a steady gig at a roadhouse in Del Rio until its owner is kidnapped and ransomed. With no shortage of suspects, the boys follow the trail into the Mexican desert, where a zany cast of bad guys gathers for the boffo final shootout. It's like a particularly good episode of The Dukes of Hazzard: corny as hell, but heaps of fun." Source
